1. What is the main idea of the paper?
-The main idea of the paper was to provide information about Graphology (the study of handwriting). The research paper was trying to prove that a certain person's handwriting can show talents, personalities, mental problems and many other things. They also use Graphology to tell the difference between real signatures, and forged signatures.
2. What experiment, if any, was performed?
-The experiment that they used to prove that Graphology was a legitimate way to analyze handwriting, was by putting the writer through various tests to see if they in fact impacted the writer. One of the tests was to give the writer a small space to write in, gradually, the space got bigger, along with the signature. When the line in the box gave a small amount of room, the signature became very small, but when the line gave the writer a large amount of space, the signature got bigger.
^--- picture above shows how certain people write, depending on the situation they're in.
^-- picture above shows how certain people write, with a designated amount of space.
3. Was the experiment GS or BS? That is, was there a large sample size, a cause-and-effect relationship, etc.
-The experiment was good science, because they had a smaple size of 1,316 signatures, and a cause-and-effect that seemed reasonable. Every restraint that the writer had, adjusted each person's signature. For example, when the writing space was small, the signature looked the same, but the size might not have necessarily been the same as if they had written it as normal.
4. What did the authors determine about forensic graphology?
-The conclusion of the research paper was that they found a common relationship between graphology and graphometry. They concluded that depending on the environment the reader may be in, they might not write their signature exactly the same way.
5. Name at least five interesting facts from the paper that you think the rest of the class might appreciate:
-Handwriting has been studied for almost four hundred years!
-Psychological Graphology uses the technique of picking up psychic impressions about a person from a specimen of their handwriting.
-Graphometry looks at the signature and Graphology tells about the writer's personality.
-Graphology comes from Abb Jean-Hippolyte Michon in Paris in 1897, by putting together two Greek words, graphein (to write) and logos (science).
-"Was demonstrated through experimentation, using hidden Markov models as classifiers, and a data set composed as 5,600 signatures, that these features reach interesting results in detecting simple, random and simulated forgeries."
